Thought the group would like this. BIDA UNESCO WORLD CREATIVE CITY & Lesley Lababidi's Legacy
The British Museum places a high priority on the preservation of endangered material knowledge. Through its work in this realm, the museum aims to call attention to, to research and preserve the craft, skills, practices and knowledge of the material world that are in danger of disappearing.
*The Lost Legacy of Bida Bikini* was commissioned by Chief Lesley Lababidi, an American author of Egyptian and Nigerian history and culture. The film documents the ancient glassmaking traditions of Bida, Niger State, Nigeria, in a rich and engrossing narrative. In 2021, it was screened at Glasgow COP26 Film Festival. In 2022, in Lagos, Nigeria, it was screened at iREP International Film Festival and at Screen Out Loud hosted by the Alliance Franҫaise at the Mike Adenuga Centre, Lagos.
The Lost Legacy is on permanent display on the British Museum website: [drs.britishmuseum.org/articles/media/Lost_legacy_of_Bida_Bikini/14535420](drs.britishmuseum.org/articles/media/Lost_legacy_of_Bida_Bikini/14535420)
For turning the floodlight on the artisanal culture of Bida, in 2019, Alhaji Dr. Yahaya Abubakar CFR, the Etsu Nupe, traditional ruler of Bida, conferred on Lesley Lababidi the title of *Jikadiyan Gargajiyan Nupe* (Ambassador of Nupe Traditions) on 17thNovember 2019 at an official turbaning ceremony witnessed by the community.
Earlier this year, in 2022, when UNESCO awarded Bida City the status of one of the world’s creative cities, the Etsu called her to express his gratitude for the immense contributions she has made towards bringing the knowledge of the ancient and endangered glassmaking traditions of Bida to the world.
In Lababidi’s words taken from her blog Nomad4Now: nomad4now.com/2022/03/25/return-to-bida-2022/
“*Seven years of promoting heritage awareness and preservation in Nupeland includes articles, booklets, programs, international exhibitions, Instagram @bida_glassmakers, and the documentary [permanently displayed on the British Museum website]. These efforts led to UNESCO designating Bida as the creative city of crafts and folk art in Nigeria*.**”**
